Flying with a baby can seem daunting, but with some planning and preparation, it can also be a manageable experience. My husband and I, with family and friends scattered across the country, found ourselves embarking on numerous trips with our daughter Sophia, starting when she was just five months old. By the time she was thirteen months, she had already logged thirteen flights! In this blog post, I'll share some of the tips and tricks we've learned along the way to make flying with a baby as smooth as possible.
Packing:
Before any trip, packing is key. If this is your first time flying with a baby, the idea might seem overwhelming, but fear not—lists are your best friend. I advocate for creating a comprehensive packing list, organizing it into categories like diaper bag essentials, clothing, toiletries, toys, and food. I've found packing cubes to be a lifesaver for keeping Sophia's belongings organized within our suitcase. Additionally, when packing your diaper bag, prioritize items based on necessity and accessibility. Always include essentials like a change of clothes, diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream, teething toys, and anything to aid in soothing during the flight. Remember, packing light is key, and consider purchasing bulky items like diapers and wipes upon arrival at your destination.
Attire:
Comfort is crucial when traveling, but so is functionality. While I used to swear by leggings, I've since switched to pants with pockets for added storage convenience. A fanny pack can be a discreet yet handy addition for storing essentials like boarding passes, wallet, and your phone. Layering is also a smart choice, providing both warmth and privacy during nursing sessions. Opt for clothing that allows for easy removal during TSA checks, and don't forget slip-on shoes for convenience.
Navigating the Airport and Plane:
Deciding whether to bring a stroller through the airport is a personal choice. While it offers additional storage and a place for your baby outside of the carrier, it can be inconvenient to collapse and check at the gate. Give yourself ample time at the airport, especially if traveling with a little one. Check-in processes can be time-consuming, and unforeseen issues like discrepancies with lap child reservations may arise. Arriving early also allows for a much-needed coffee break and a chance for your baby to burn off some energy before the flight.
During Your Stay:
Traveling with a baby can understandably heighten stress levels, but it's essential to prioritize both your and your baby's well-being. Help your baby acclimate to the new environment by allowing them time to explore and play in their sleeping space upon arrival. Stay organized throughout your stay to minimize stress, and don't forget to restock on essentials as needed. Above all, try to relax and enjoy the experience, focusing on creating positive memories for both you and your little one.
Flying with a baby certainly presents its challenges, but with careful planning and a positive mindset, it can also be a rewarding adventure. So take a deep breath, embrace the journey, and cherish the moments spent exploring the world with your little one.
